Welcome to CRER:

The study of radioactivity and artificial radionuclides in the environment is important for public health. The naturally occurring radionuclides present a health hazard through redistribution and movement in the environment. The human health is also affected by a variety of anthropogenic activities such as weapons testing, nuclear fallout and other artificial activities. It is thus important to understand anthropogenic activity in an aquatic as well as in terrestrial environment. This helps in the assessment of their radiological significance to both present and future generations. The Centre for Research in Environmental Radiation (CRER) has been established with the objective of identifying and mapping out of radioactivity from all sources in and around Kuwait.

The Radiation Safety Unit (RSU) was established in 1982 in the Faculty of Science, Kuwait University. By the decree of the Dean, Professor Reda Hasan, the RSU was transformed into the Centre for Research in Environmental Radiation (CRER) in 2002. The CRER is responsible for conducting research in environmental radiation and for all matters concerning the use of radioisotopes in research and teaching.

The CRER is a state-of-the-art research facility with most important radiation measuring equipments. The Centre has spectroscopy facilities for measuring environmental samples for alpha, beta and gamma radiations. The facilities include a liquid scintillation counter, gamma counter, portable and fixed High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma-spectroscopy systems, NaI spectrometer, radon air monitors and an alpha analyst.
