Long Term Training (4 weeks):

The CRER is regularly conducting training course in “Environmental Radioactivity measurements” and “Radiation Protection” the course contains both lecture classes and experiment laboratory classes. Each course will have 20 hours lectures and 40 hours practical training.

Course 1:
Course Contents for Environmental radioactivity measurements:

Lecture Class:

 Basic Concepts
 Radiation units
 Radiation sources
 Interactions of radiation with matter
 Radiation detectors
 Dosimeters dose measurements
 Environmental samples collection and preparation
 Measurements of environmental radioactivity

Practical Class:

 Demonstration of radiation monitoring and measurement instruments
 GM detector / NaI detector
 Inverse square law verification
 Gamma spectra using NaI and HPGe detectors
 Alpha spectrometer using alpha spectrometry
 Alpha/beta measurements in liquids using liquid scintillation counter
      and gamma measurements in liquids using gamma counter
 Half value thickness measurements for beta/gamma radiation
      using GM counter
 Energy resolution measurements using NaI and HPGe
      gamma spectrometers
 The use of different types of survey meters
 Environmental sample collection and preparation for example
      soil samples, etc …..

Course 2:
Course Content for Radiation Protection:

Lecture Class:

 National and international rules
 Classification and laboratory radioisotopes
 Procedure of radiation protection
 Methods of dose calculations
 Transportation and storage of radioisotopes
 Radioactive waste disposal
 Radiation accidents and emergency plans
 Biological effects of radiation

Practical Class:

 Gamma ray intensity as a function of distance
 Beta radiation intensity as a function of distance
 Shielding calculation of beta and gamma radiation
 Efficiency of GM detector for alpha beta and gamma radiation
 Beta backscatter as a function of atomic number and scattering medium
 Use of different types of contamination monitors
 Methods of swap sampling and counting
 Decontamination tools and decontamination procedures
 Radon monitoring and calculation of radon working level

Short Term Training and demonstration classes are being conducted to under graduate students of physics, biological sciences, and chemistry.
